January 9, 2014 - Discuss and Research Social Issues

I can make a claim about social issue and discuss both sides of the issue.

To do this I must be able to formulate a claim and discuss both sides of an issue, even if I don't agree.

I will demonstrate this by discussing. researching, and completing the graphic organizer with a partner (below).

What Needs to Change? Identifying Social Issues
Directions: With a partner discuss two social issues that you feel strongly about and write down a claim for each topic.  We will do the first together as a class.
Our Turn: __________________________________________ does/does not benefit society because______________________________________________________________________.
As a class discuss the benefits and problems with this social issue.  Then, fill in the T-Chart below.

Your turn: __________________________________________ does/does not benefit society because___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.
With your partner discuss the benefits and problems with this social issue.  Then, fill in the T-Chart below.

Your turn Again: __________________________________ does/does not benefit society because___________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________.
With your partner discuss the benefits and problems with this social issue.  Then, fill in the T-Chart below.

Final Step: Find a new partner, someone with a similar topic but different claim then yours, and interview each other by discussing your perspectives.
Name of Person You Interview: _____________________________________________________

According to _________________________, ________________________ does/does not benefit society because __________________________________________________________________.

I agree/disagree with his/her perspective because ___________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________.

Although we had different perspectives about ________________________________________, I thought ________________________________________________________________________.

Now write a short reflection about something new you learned today about a social issue:
